Through their long lives, fruit trees share wisdom with multiple generations and build and stabilize soil as they grow and produce! Building our region’s knowledge-base about fruit tree horticulture, demonstrating what works best, and what doesn’t, summarizes the Chilkat Valley Historical Society’s Experimental/Demonstration Orchard Project.
We are living in a time of a warming planet, which introduces tremendous uncertainty, but is likely to mean longer growing seasons in the future. Through our Orchard Project, the Chilkat Valley Historical Society is now planning to establish a one-acre facility on property owned by our partnering organization, the American Bald Eagle Foundation. The site is at the south end (lower) of the Henderson Farm field on Alan Rd, in Haines
Here is the link to our Experimental/Demonstration Orchard Draft Plan, which includes a 3000sq.ft, year-round greenhouse and about 215 fruit trees growing indoors and outdoors.
To prevent wildlife problems, the entire facility will be enclosed in a barrier fence, 8ft tall. Our initial, Draft Plan has an estimated cost range of $90,000 – $100,000.
